How to Become Who You Mean to Be: 45 Notes From a Five-Day Retreat

A few weeks ago, I wrote a piece about why it’s so hard to get healthy. I mentioned a 5 day retreat I went on in 2013, and today, I’m sharing 45 of the hundreds of notes I took.

  1. Plan to fail by applying all what if’s and possible set-backs. If we don’t, then the set-backs become failures.

  2. If all your focus and validation is on the outcome, when you fail, you’ll be devastated.

  3. When stressed always ask yourself—in 6 months, how important will this be?

  4. Plan according to what you can get done, not according to the stress. Turn the stress into a plan.

  5. People trying to avoid pain get hurt much worse than those prepared for it.

  6. You build what you’re going to get by what you do daily, not by one big act. Inspiration comes from immersing yourself in something. Inspiration comes on the back of doing something every single day.

  7. Don’t make the mistake of thinking your relationship with someone else is any different from the relationship you have with yourself, Keeping promises to yourself is everything.

  8. Decide on 5 priorities for tomorrow before you go to sleep. Otherwise, you’ll waste your best energy on decision making,

  9. Always ask yourself, “Is what I’m about to do important to my goals? Is what I’m about to do for the next hour advancing my goals?”

  10. Spend one hour a week purging and organizing all incoming content, tasks and admin.

  11. Build in a ritual for a certain period or time every day or week; a time to be reactive (respond to emails, calls, texts, etc). Build in the act of reacting.

  12. If you play cards with people at a lower level, you won’t get better, so don’t consistently engage with people who are worse than you in your arena. Focus on the best and model them. Make the best your competition pool. Don’t compete with the worst.

  13. Don’t base or build your confidence on what you’re not. The only true art form is turning whatever you have into something magnificent.

  14. Don’t measure success on things that are outside of your control.

  15. People bend, compromise and change their standards to stay safe. It’s nuts to be in rapport with people we’re not even emulating.
